How to integrate Hotjar HeatMaps with your Olitt website

Hotjar heatmaps is a visualization tool that aggregates user actions such as clicks, scrolls and movements within yoursite and presents them in a form of a graphical map. Heatmaps accord you great benefits, for instance, track and analyze user reactions on the various section or products within your site, which sections are most visited, visitor lookups etc.

This information can be used to improve certain sections within your site to ensure all services and goods offered to meet customer expectation. Through this, you can maintain or increase users of your site.

Note: To integrate this service with your Olitt website, you need a domain name and site code.

Don’t worry if the 2 requirement sound unfamiliar or confused where to get them, this article guides you through a step-by-step process to ensure you don’t get lost.

Enough of this, let’s get started!

Step 1: Log in to Hotjar dashboard

If you already have an account with Hotjar, login by providing required credentials to be authenticated. For new users, you can create an account. Hotjar provides a 15-day free trial that you can access their services after which you are required to opt for a premium plan.

During registration, you are required to fill the form below and others.

The site URL is the domain name of your website that’s used to access your site on a browser. This can be either a free domain from Olitt.com or custom domain that is linked with your Olitt website. However, this information can be updated later on your dashboard.

Step 2: Obtain the Site ID

Site ID is a unique identifier of your website. This code is automatically generated by Hotjar and it’s not editable and it’s provided once you register your domain name. If you are creating the product for the first time, the site ID is provided once you complete filling the forms. Copy the site ID only to your clipboard.

If you already have an account, in your dashboard, click on the top left icon to open the dropdown menu and select sites and organization and all your registered site will be displayed. You can create a new product by clicking “+new site” green button

The site id representing a given website will be displayed at the start of each row. Copy the site id of the website you need to integrate.

Note: You need to ensure session capture is enabled on your site.

While still on sites and organizations, Click the settings icon of the website you copied the code and check it as shown below.

Step 3:  Add the code to your Olitt website.

Open a new tab on your browser and log in to your Olitt account.

From the “my website” page, click the more (…) options and select plugins. Ensure that the website you selected matches with the one added on Hotjar dashboard.

From the list that appears, scroll down and locate “Hotjar heatmaps”.  Click on Expand.

Paste the code and click the connect button to complete the process.

Step 4: Verify the integration

From your Hotjar dashboard, click on Tracking tab at the top right and select verify the installation.

Ensure URL match the site you want to track.

If you complete the above steps successfully, then you should be able to receive a message similar to one below.

You’re now able to track your website using Hotjar heatmaps.
